Quick answer: Alfalfa meal is dried, ground alfalfa with about 15–20% protein, high digestible fibre and plenty of calcium and vitamins. It is a staple in rabbit pellets, a quality fibre and protein source for horses and dairy cattle, and adds colour to egg yolks in poultry. Introduce it gradually and balance its high calcium in the overall diet.

Feeding tips

Introduce gradually over 7–10 days to avoid digestive upsets.
Balance calcium and phosphorus, especially for young or breeding animals.
Keep it dry; mouldy alfalfa is dangerous, particularly for horses and rabbits.
Use as part of a balanced ration, not the only feed.

Meal vs pellets

Meal mixes easily into rations and compost; pellets reduce dust and waste. Alfalfa meal is also a popular organic fertilizer for roses and vegetables. See our alfalfa meal.
