Alfalfa meal is dried, ground alfalfa with about 15–20% protein, high digestible fibre and plenty of calcium and vitamins.

Wheat bran has more protein (about 14–17%) and fibre and keeps well, making it a safe, bulky feed for cattle, goats and horses.

Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most pig diets because cereals such as corn, wheat and cassava are low in it.

Methionine is usually the first limiting amino acid in corn–soybean broiler diets, so supplementing DL-methionine improves growth, breast meat yield, feathering and feed conversion.

Corn gluten feed (about 18–22% protein) is a fibrous wet-milling by-product best for cattle and other ruminants.

Blood meal is a fast-acting organic fertilizer with about 12–13% nitrogen.

When buying feather meal, choose properly hydrolysed meal with 80–85% crude protein and pepsin digestibility of at least 75%, as raw keratin is indigestible.

Fish meal has more protein (55–65%) and better amino acid digestibility, making it the premium choice for aquaculture and young animals.

Soybean meal is sold mainly as 44% protein (with hulls) or 48% Hi-Pro (dehulled).

Fish meal is the most important protein source in aquaculture feed because it is highly digestible, palatable and rich in essential amino acids and omega-3 fats.
